UK artist Callum Gardner uses Aston mics exclusively for debut album project
UK singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Callum Gardner relied on an array of Aston mics for the recording of his deftly named ‘Debut Album’, due for launch in mid May 2021. Above is one of several teaser videos posted in advance of the full release becoming available.
The self-managed Guildford artist clocked up an impressive 128 UK shows during 2019, performing his unique brand of organic, blues-infused material. Once lockdown put live appearances on hold Callum set about realising his dream of self-producing his first full-length album. Armed with a Spirit, Stealth, Origin, a Starlight stereo pair and a Halo Shadow to tame any unruly room acoustics, he set to work, playing nearly all the instruments himself. The heavily guitar-based project included the challenges of capturing steel and nylon string acoustics, a 12-string acoustic, a resonator, a fretless acoustic bass, a 5-string bass and various electric guitars plus, of course, Callum’s distinctive, growling vocals. He worked remotely with guitarist Ronnie Ciamponi, who performed on nine of the twelve tracks on the album, which was then mixed and mastered by Eliott Glinn.
“I used Astons to record every last bit of audio on my upcoming release and look forward to showcasing their microphones at all of my future live shows, live streams, writing and recording sessions!” Callum told his Instagram fans.
Callum gained a Diploma in Music Performance from ACM Guildford in 2012 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance and Production from LCCM London in 2016 and says his influences include Stevie Wonder, Chris Cornell, Bob Marley, BB King, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Carole King, Bill Withers, Johnny Cash and Carlos Santana (some line-up!)
The 12 track album will be available digitally on all the usual platforms and, if you’re quick, there will be a limited run of 250 vinyls. Live shows to promote the release will follow as soon as the live scene reawakens.
We’re stoked to see nearly the full range of Aston mics used exclusively for what we hope will be the first of many releases from our newest family member!
