Aston Starlights on tour

Top UK acts IDLES, Wombats and prog rock legends King Crimson are all currently on tour and, between them, playing dates all over the world during the remainder of 2018 and into 2019..

This eclectic mix of venue-fillers will all be touring with Aston Starlight mics as an integral part of their stage sound. The laser-guided small diaphragm condensers have become a firm favourite with top touring sound engineers, who love their sound, versatility and, courtesy of the built-in laser targeting, the ease with which they can recall mic positions, night after night.

Chris Porter, engineering for King Crimson, who currently tour with three drummers, told us:

“The Starlights performed superbly and the ability to choose from one of the three voices available is very useful when there are three drummers on stage. I love using the Aston Spirit as a mid and side pair the unique shape means they can sit one on top of the other for a perfect stereo image.”

Wombats awesome live sound is the responsibility of front of house engineer Russell Tite:

“Starlights on overheads...I have to say I'm very Impressed! Particularly with the way the snare comes across thru them. I guess that, in itself is showing how good the laser pointer is. As I aim them both directly towards the centre of the snare drum and bang the snare was joyous.”

IDLES, who caused a storm with their recent riotous performance on Later with Jools Holland tour, are using a matched pair of Starlights as drum overheads, in addition to Aston Spirits on their guitar cabs.

More than 70 audio professionals (known as the Aston 33) were involved in the development of the Starlight so it is perhaps unsurprising so many top engineers now include the mic in their stage and studio specs.

The Starlight features three independent voices, Vintage, Modern and Hybrid, and almost perfectly linear off-axis response. The mic has won a host of international awards plus a nomination for the prestigious 2018 NAMM TEC industry award.
