Yaron Stavi

Yaron Stavi plays the double bass and electric bass in various styles of music including Jazz, Rock, Classical and World Music. He studied Classical music in Berlin and played with numerous orchestras and conductors around Europe, North America and Asia. We caught up with Yaron about his current projects and his indispensable Aston Spirit. Yaron Stavi is a contributor to the Use Your Voice Global Collaboration

Music was always there.

I actually can’t remember a time when I was not hooked into music. As far as I can remember, music was always there. Music was always my life and is still my life. I was born into a house full of music as my dad is a huge music lover and my brother was already playing the piano when I was born. I remember always loving to listen to music and to make noise.

When I was six I’ve started playing the violin but quit after two years. When I was ten years old I started playing the guitar which I play until today. From the guitar I’ve moved to electric bass and later to double bass.

I decided to take on the double bass

I started playing electric bass at the age of 15 after playing acoustic and electric guitar for five years. I always loved the bass and bass players such as Paul McCartney, Sting and more and wanted to be like them. After getting more and more into Jazz, I decided to take on the double bass when I was seventeen.

Recording with David Gilmour from Pink Floyd at Abbey Road Studios and his own studio in Brighton for his album Rattle That Lock was a huge memorable moment for me. I also worked with Robert Wyatt and played on his last three albums. I have really enjoyed working and playing with Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music for the last 17 years. One of my most memorable moments was playing with Nigel Kennedy in Hyde Park in front of 50,000 people and at the Royal Albert Hall.

My double bass is a 170 years old

My double bass is a 170 years old German bass. My main electric bass is a 1970 Fender Jazz Bass and I use few more basses. I use Epifani, Ashdown, Gallien Krueger and Acoustic Image amps and I record on Logic Pro X.

Aston mics were recommended to me by a friend who is a producer, engineer and a drummer who actually was advising Aston during the development of the Spirit mic.

I have been working on a new album with Phil Manzanera and a new album with Gilad Atzmon and The Orient House Ensemble.

A. Professional tennis player, Film director

Q. What would your fantasy mic be?
A. A mic that is as good as the Neumann U47 but at an affordable price…

Q. What are the 4 words you’d chose to describe Aston, or your experience with the brand?
A. Great beautiful sounding mic

Q. What was the first song that made you cry?
A. Because by The Beatles. It is one of Lennon’s best songs and one my most favourites. I remember listening to it as a child and it brought tears to my eyes.
