British singer-songwriter James Vickery, whose silky vocals and cross-genre sound have earned him a devoted following in the alternative R&B scene which, he admits, he fell into quite accidentally. James shared the early stages of his musical journey with us, which began with vocal training to overcome childhood health issues a lot of health implications left me needing a vocal coach to learn how to speak again" His singing aspirations, initially just a passion, took on a new necessity as it became part of his recovery process. “Singing was a natural progression to improve diction and breathing…I’ve been on this journey pretty organically since.

In 2018, James' career soared when his performance on the Colors YouTube channel reached over 35 million people. This led to a publishing deal with Roc Nation and a collaboration with his “favourite artist, Musiq Soulchild” on the effortlessly smooth, Motown inspired Come To Me. Just one of the many intimate, soulful cuts from his 2021 album ‘Songs That Made Me Feel’.

In 2023 he hit the road and embarked on a sold-out UK/US tour across 4 cities, then playing to 10,000 people in South Africa. James closed out a monumental year; “by proudly signing my first record deal with Red Bull Records.”

 

Artistic Evolution

James describes his musical style as "Alternative Sensual R&B," blending contemporary R&B with alternative and gospel influences. Asked about staying inspired in an ever-changing industry; "It's definitely a challenge” he shares. “But I like to write about what's happening in my life…staying true to my own story means I'll always have something to say," he explains.

"I love collaboration. A lot of my best friends in music are engineers and producers. Having a great bond behind the scenes is so important. The team I have now are near enough the same people I've brought with me every step of this arduous journey."

He reflects on creating his latest EP Sheet Music making "a point of taking myself less seriously…having fun in the visuals.” sharing his efforts to be “a truer representation of myself…a risk in the R&B space where everyone seems to take themselves very seriously.”

When recording, James is a devoted Aston user. "I only record/produce vocals at home outside of official sessions. A lot has been recorded with my custom Aston Spirit and Halo." Citing Aston's ongoing support as "second to none" James says; "If you are British and make music, it makes no sense to me why you wouldn't have an Aston Microphone in your arsenal."

Describing his relationship with the brand, James tell us The incredible team have been nothing but supportive…I’m extremely grateful for that.” A long-time collaborator, his Aston Spirit features prominently in content across his socials, amassing hundreds of thousands of views.

Looking ahead, James plans to release another album within the next year and bring his razor-sharp live show, a personal point of pride, to even more audiences across the globe. He’s especially excited to get his hands on our newest handheld offering, telling us "I intend bringing the Apex around the world with me!
