Troy Antunes

Producer, Engineer and Musician
Troy Antunes

Troy Antunes is a US musician producer and Musical Director for some of the biggest names in the business. Based permanently in the UK now for the last 15 years, Troy has played with and produced the likes of Justin Timberlake and Anastacia, so getting the best possible sound with zero stress is king…

Tunes, Tunes, Tunes

My music career was all started by my family. I spent the early part of my life touring America with my mother while she performed with a band called Stone Velvet, & then later on learning the ropes of the music business from my Dad and my Godfather, Mike ‘Tunes’ Antunes, who was the saxophonist of the multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band. I’ve since been blessed to have played with some great acts like NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys and some of the coolest TV programming, including The Super Bowl 35 Halftime Show, David Letterman, SNL, 2002 Winter Olympics and The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno. After many a tour and TV show it was time to focus on my creative side, which has led me into projects with Blue, Liz McClarnon, Aston Merrygold, and most recently Anastasia in both production and Musical Direction roles. I’ve also been allowed to be part of some great product developments like Aston Mics & UAD’s Softube Eden Amplifier WT800 plugin. I guess that makes me a true studio Geek!

I first got involved with Aston because I know and love the people behind the brand, and when I had the opportunity to get involved with the development of their new brand I knew I was going to love being part of that family. They take such care and pride in what they do and understand gear from a musician’s perspective.

Mic it up, plug it in and sound great

I’m currently working with a stereo pair of Starlights and 2 Warm Audio WA412’s pre’s for instrument recording, the RND Portico II with an Aston Origin or Spirit and Halo for my vocal recordings, and an Eden WTP for all live bass recording. Everything is routed through a Tascam DM 4800, with Eve SC407’s for midfield & MunroSonic Egg150 for near field reference. My go to DAW is Motu’s Digital Performer 9.5 and I’ve also started using Presonus Studio 3. Both DAW’s are quite elegant and are great for both music production projects and live musical direction. I pick all of my gear so that any vocal or instrument session gives me the best sound without having to muck around with knob turning and doctoring. I like ease of use, so all my gear has to give me that while delivering on performance. Mic it up, plug it in and sound great straight away is how I like it.

Killer Production

The Spirit and Origin are great for modern vocal production… I’ve done a crap load of vocal production with these mics and I’ve yet to come across a voice that the Spirit hasn’t made sound killer. I’ve worked with all types of mics over the years and always had to check several out on a new session to find the right one for the job, but again for me recording Pop, R&B, Rock Vocals, you name it, the Spirit slays me every time. The minute a vocalist sings into it I’m jumping up and down in my studio ‘cause it always brings life to a performance …and on acoustic guitar, the Starlights run through the Warm Audio Tone Beast… WOW! What a crisp, full bodied and controlled sound. They stand right up there with the Neumann KM 184’s

I’ve used my Aston Gear on many a project but I really enjoyed using them on my live applications as Musical Director and Sound designer for Aston Merrygold and Anastasia. It might seem counter-intuitive, but I tend to record a larger variety of things for live applications than in the studio. Be it percussion instruments ranging from tambourines to congas and triangles, or acoustic and electric stringed instruments, footsteps in sand on a wood floor or drawing a heavy ass brick along the concrete entry way (yes, really!), my Aston mics always deliver the goods. They make my workflow so easy on the back end ‘cause what I record doesn’t need to be ‘fixed’…. If you want a killer production then you need to have the best source sound possible, and that’s what they give you. That’s the same if not more so for live Musical Direction and sound design.

Out-takes

Q. If you weren’t working in music what would you be doing?
A. “Dying a slow & agonizing death."

Q. What would your fantasy mic be?
A. "An Aston ribbon Mic."

Q. What are the 4 words you’d chose to describe Aston, or your experience with the brand?
A. “Sweet, Tough, Killer, Perfect”

Q, What was the first song to make you cry?
A. "I know that’s strange but I’ve always been caught up in the intricacies of a track or song. I actually hate that about myself. If I were to say a song that moves me emotionally, I’d say; “A Song for You” or “Giving Up” by Donny Hathaway. Why those songs? Its Donny Hathaway Man, need I say more?"
