Ben Ellis

Musician, FOH Engineer

Musician and FOH sound engineer Ben Ellis embarked on his musical voyage at the age of five. By the time he was into his teens he had developed a passion for the bass guitar: "I loved its simplicity and how you could feel the sounds," he says. This visceral connection with music would prove a cornerstone in his career, both on the stage and in the sound booth…

From Iggy to Wet Leg

Ben’s journey has been punctuated by extraordinary experiences, notably a six-year tenure providing the low-end for rock legend Iggy Pop. "That was an incredible experience. To get that call to play with my favourite-ever musical icon changed my life in so many ways." This stint did not only hone his skills as a musician but also engrained in him a deep understanding of live sound dynamics, and ultimately to an equally distinguished career in live sound engineering.

As a Front of House engineer, he has helped shape the sonic landscapes for some of today’s, and tomorrow's, superstars. Working with indie sensations Wet Leg represents one of the crowning achievements of an already decorated career. He was with them "from when they were a small band playing club shows to their becoming a household name."

When it comes to gear, Ellis is refreshingly simple in his approach. Forgoing brand-elitism in favour of equipment that gives him an instinctive and instant positive reaction; "I'm always looking for the thing that makes you go, 'oooh yeahhhh!' when you hear it." This search has led him to Aston and specifically the Spirit, Origin, and Stealth microphones, the former LDCs becoming indispensable tools in his arsenal, often used as a stereo pair.

Out with the Foo Fighters

The eccentric British edge to Aston mics is something Ellis holds particularly dear. "Aston makes things that are a little bit weirder than most and I dig that," he says. These mics have gone on to join him in all kinds of environments and high-profile projects - most recently at live shows with Wet Leg supporting the legendary Foo Fighters on their UK tour, and at a packed-out Soccer Mommy set at Glastonbury last month - and they continue to deliver exactly the sound quality and reliability he demands.

Looking ahead, Ellis remains enthusiastic about new collaborations and experiences in the ever-evolving music industry. "If you put the work in then music is a gift that keeps on giving you beautiful things," he reflects. It is this attitude that has him leading the way in live sound engineering, prepared for new challenges and always ready to explore fresh sonic territories.
